All That You Need to Know About Computer Recycling

Computer Recycling Information: In today’s technology-driven world, recycling old computers, Macbooks, servers, and laptops has become more critical than manufacturing up-to-the-minute electronic devices and gadgets. The upsurging of e-waste is posing some serious threats to our communities and the environment as a whole. You may already have heard the term “Computer Recycling”. But then you may not know the sheer fact that your old computers, Macbooks, and laptops can be recycled. Various computer components such as monitors, keyboards, motherboards, screens, central processors, and mice are recycled the world over. By doing so, you can contribute to society in a myriad of ways, such as reducing landfills, promoting human and environmental health, and conserving precious non-renewable resources. Relying less on mining materials to be used to build computers is also a big plus! In this article, we’ll walk you through the whole process of recycling obsolete computers and laptops.

Assortment Of Items To Recycle

Obsolete Computer And Electronics Recycling: First and foremost, the old and obsolete computers and laptops are collected from individuals, businesses, and e-waste collection points. Other times they are dropped off at our location at 76th and Aurora in Seattle. Some companies charge from the computer’s owners for disposal, while a few companies like Computer Recycling Seattle don’t charge a single dime from the owners when they recycle computers laptops and Macbooks. We do charge a small for recycling printers (because they have to be hauled a long ways for proper disposal) and CRT monitors. Read more about E-Waste Recycling Here.

E-Waste Categorization

Recycled E-Waste Is Sorted: In the next phase, all the computers and laptops, as well as the  computer components are compartmentalized and sorted. This is done before moving into the advanced processing or refurbishing stages. This may include testing of recycled electronics, laptops and computers. Doing so is crucial since each item is made up of a specific material or resources, and can be re-used in different ways. Some items are separated for donations to non-profits too. If your organization has a need for computers, or laptops give us a call.

Assessment Of Recycled Equipment

Testing And Sorting Of Recycled Electronics: In this part, the usability of computers, laptops, and their various components are gauged. Computers that are still found to be in good working conditions or only require a little upgrading are refurbished and then sold or donated to deserving families or institutions. This amounts to recycling for re-use. We process and refurbish a lot of computers, laptops, and Macbooks every week.

Manual Dismantlement

Can The Recycled Computers / Laptops Be Re-Used: The computers are thoroughly assessed and sorted out for potential re-use. Computers and laptops that don’t satisfy the requirements for refurbishing are taken apart manually. Some of the most common disassembled parts entail DVD drives, sound and graphic cards, memory, cpu’s, circuit boards, keyboards, hard disks, power supplies, computer cases etc. The ferrous and non-ferrous components, and circuit boards, are further categorized due to their composition of detrimental constituents such as cadmium, lead, barium, mercury, and phosphorus. Each type of materiel is processed a different way to facilitate re-use, or processing for manufacturing.

Computer Recycling Seattle About Computer Recycling

Data Destruction

We Destroy All Data On Recycled Computers: The hard drives, heat sinks, and processors are crushed or disassembled and sent off for processing in this phase. This is before they are processed into aluminum ingots and other types of refining. These materials are used in the automotive industry, and for manufacturing other electronics. The remaining materials such as metals, circuit boards,  plastic shells of the computers, wires and so on are sorted and processed separately. Smelting (downstream) is also used to recover precious metals such as gold, silver, iron, and copper from the debris, among other valued components from shredded components at processing facilities. All hard drives from computers left for recycling are wiped or destroyed.

Computer Recycling Information – Reuse

We Pass On Recycled Computers: The obtained materials and unusable parts from the old computers, laptops, and Macbooks are brought to the secondary recyclers for additional environmentally friendly processing. Metals from recycled computers are sent to the metal recyclers, and the same goes with some of the plastic; for that, they use these materials to produce new products whenever possible.
